Auto Defrosting
« Back to Glossary Index
An automatic function in heat pumps and some cold-climate air conditioning units that periodically melts frost or ice on the outdoor coil. When sensors detect significant frost buildup, the system temporarily switches into defrost mode (often by reversing the refrigeration cycle) and heats the coil until the ice melts, then resumes normal operation. This ensures efficient heating even in cold, humid conditions.
