Cubic Feet Per Minute (CFM)
« Back to Glossary Index
Cubic feet per minute (CFM) is a measure of airflow volume. One CFM equals one cubic foot of air moving past a point in one minute. HVAC airflow is often rated in CFM to indicate how much air the blower or fan moves through the system. Proper CFM is crucial for system performance; for example, a typical central air handler provides roughly 350–450 CFM per ton of cooling capacity. Too low or too high CFM can affect comfort and efficiency.
