Compressor
« Back to Glossary Index
The pump at the heart of an air conditioner or heat pump that pressurizes refrigerant. By compressing the low-pressure refrigerant gas into a high-pressure gas, the compressor enables heat exchange in the condenser and evaporator coils. In short, the compressor circulates refrigerant through the system. It takes refrigerant vapor from the evaporator and pumps it to the condenser, where the heat is released outdoors.
