Load Calculation

« Back to Glossary Index

The process (often called Manual J in residential HVAC) of determining the heating and cooling requirements of a building. A load calculation takes into account factors like square footage, insulation, windows, occupancy, and climate to calculate how many BTUs are needed to keep the space comfortable. It is a crucial step for proper sizing of HVAC equipment. Correct load calculation ensures the system is not oversized or undersized, which helps prevent short-cycling or inadequate conditioning.
