Outside Air Intake
« Back to Glossary Index
A duct or vent in the HVAC system that brings fresh outdoor air into the building for ventilation. Modern HVAC units or homes with mechanical ventilation may have an intake louver or pipe that feeds outside air into the return side of the system. This brings in fresh air to dilute indoor pollutants and ensure adequate oxygen levels. Outside air intake can be fixed or controllable (with a damper), and is often filtered before mixing with return air.
