Variable-speed Motor

« Back to Glossary Index

A blower or fan motor that can operate at multiple speeds, not just on and off. By running at lower speeds for longer periods, a variable-speed motor can provide more even heating and cooling, better humidity control, and quieter operation. It adjusts airflow to the demand. During mild conditions, for instance, it may run slowly (using little power), and only ramps up to high speed when needed. This contrasts with single-speed motors that are either full-on or off. Variable-speed blowers improve comfort and efficiency in many HVAC systems.
