Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER)
« Back to Glossary Index
A measure of cooling efficiency over an entire season. SEER is calculated by dividing the total cooling output (in BTUs) during a typical cooling season by the total electrical energy input (in watt-hours) during that season. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the air conditioner or heat pump is. For example, a SEER 16 unit provides more cooling for each watt of power than a SEER 13 unit. U.S. regulations set minimum SEER levels for new equipment; Energy Star® units have SEER significantly above the minimum.
