Thermostat
« Back to Glossary Index
A control device that senses the temperature of a space and switches the heating/cooling system on or off to maintain the desired setpoint. Modern thermostats can be manual, programmable (with daily/weekly schedules), or “smart” (Wi-Fi connected). They are typically mounted on an interior wall in a central location. When the room temperature deviates from the setpoint, the thermostat signals the HVAC system to start or stop heating/cooling. Advanced thermostats may also control fan speed and monitor humidity.
