Cycling (System Cycling)

The normal process of the HVAC system turning on and off to maintain a set temperature. When the thermostat calls for heating or cooling, the system starts (“cycles on”), and when the setpoint is reached, it shuts off (“cycles off”). Proper cycling keeps the temperature steady. If the system turns on and off too rapidly–called short-cycling–it can indicate issues like improper sizing or airflow problems.
