High-effeciency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filter

« Back to Glossary Index

A high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter is a pleated air filter engineered to capture at least 99.97% of airborne particles that are 0.3 micrometers in diameter or larger. HEPA filters are used in HVAC and air purifiers to remove dust, pollen, mold spores, bacteria, and some viruses from the air. Because of their fine filtering, HEPA filters greatly improve indoor air quality; however, they require adequate fan power and often pre-filters for central air systems.
