Zoned Heating and Cooling

« Back to Glossary Index

A method of dividing a home or building into separate “zones,” each with its own thermostat and damper control. In a zoned system, dampers in the ductwork open or close to direct conditioned air only to the zones that need it. This allows different rooms or floors to be heated and cooled independently. For example, bedrooms upstairs can be one zone and living areas downstairs another. Proper zoning increases comfort (no unwanted heat in unused rooms) and can save energy by conditioning only occupied zones.
